Hi all, this tumblr mainly exists as a way of tracking all the movies I've been watching and some of the initial thoughts, and general feelings, I've had about them.

5/5 - Fantastic movies; movies which need to be seen and enjoyed by everyone.

4/5 - Movies which are very good but don’t have that spark which compels you to make others watch them as well.

3/5 - Average movies; watchable and enjoyable, but nothing which elevates them higher. The baseline all movies are given before watching.

2/5 - Can be watched but really bland and forgettable.

1/5 - Minimal to no reason to watch these films. It may have some redeeming factors e.g. it’s so bad it’s good or there’s one character that’s awesome enough to make it not a total waste of time.

0/5- Total waste of time. Nothing redeemable about these films.

As with every review blog/site, this is all my own personal opinion so feel free to take everything with a grain of salt.

Also I'm Scottish so all reviews will be in UK English. Get used to theatre, colour and words ending in -ised.

#218 Gilda
Small time gambler Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) has come to Argentina in order to forget a past love and win some money. He quickly becomes the local casino owner’s right hand man and things seem to be looking up…that is until the owner (George Macready) returns from a trip now married to his ex: the beautiful and venomous Gilda (Rita Hayworth).
As another film noir classic from the 1940’s, this one doesn’t quite stack up to the likes of Double Indemnity, or even the Killers, but is still an interesting watch all the same.
The hatred between Hayworth’s and Ford’s characters is electrifying to watch. You’re honestly not sure if they want to kill each other or make passionate love at any given moment. Both actors give very good performances throughout and you’re really not sure which one you want to see fail because they’re both pretty horrible people.
Other than these performances however, the rest of the film is a bit of a wet squib. There’s a lot of tension but no real pay out and a sort of tacked on happy ending. If I’m watching a film noir I’m expecting everyone to die somehow so I felt just a touch cheated when this doesn’t happen. The story itself, outside of the two mains relationship, isn’t interesting enough to carry the film.
It was an ok film but I’m sure there are a lot more film noir movies out there which are a better watch than this one. 2/5
